Eccles Strengthen Midfield in International Break

October 10th 2021

We are happy to announce two new signings ahead of our return to live public performances.

With the Wychavon Entertainments contest looming, we have signed Rhys Edwards on solo euphonium and Sammy Latus makes a welcome return to our solo horn seat.

Rhys, from Solihull in the West Midlands, is a year 4 student studying under David Thornton and Steven Mead at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He was a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain in 2018 and 2019 has previously played for Slaithwaite Band and Hawk Green Bands.

Rhys stated that he was really thrilled to be joining such a brilliant, historic, fun and friendly band (Rhys’ words, not ours!) and that he was excited to find out what the future holds in store!

Sammy, a peripatetic brass teacher for Oldham Music Services, returns after a spell at Black Dyke Band. Sammy, was previously our solo horn player during 2016 and 2017 and has also played previously for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band.

Our Musical Director, Mareika Gray said that she was delighted with the new players, stating that Sammy’s professionalism and experience and Rhys’ potential and enthusiasm are both great assets for the band going forward.

The band would like to thank the 2 outgoing players Peter McDonough (who moved on just before lockdown started) and Helen Moore. We wish them both well for the future.

As for now, the band are rehearsing for the upcoming Wychavon Entertainment Contest which takes place on 30th October. The band have a great set of results at this contest, but this time we are just happy that we can finally play in public again after such a long time away.
