Debbie Reigns Supreme at Rainford

February 16th 2015

Debbie Fry; Eccles Borough Band’s principal cornet player, was recently crowned the winner of the Rainford Slow Melody Contest, held at the historic Rainford Village Hall.

Playing the moving piece Healing Waters by Kenneth Downie, Debbie held off incredibly stiff competition from some of the leading players in the country. “It’s been a wonderful day today,” Debbie, after the contest. “There were so many amazing performances, the result came as a fantastic surprise. Everyone played so well, I’m just glad I didn’t have to adjudicate.”

Eccles Borough Band’s star player; originally from Wales, started playing the cornet at the age of 10 and was a regular feature in the National Youth Brass Band of Wales until she moved to Manchester to study biomedical science at University. Debbie joined Eccles Borough Band in 2012 and began taking lessons with long-time supporter of the band, cornet superstar Russell Gray. Since that time she has lead the band to numerous competition success; most recently Wychavon Festival Of Brass Champions and the Butlin’s Mineworkers Festival Champions, and is looking forward to competing at the Area Qualifiers in Blackpool next week.

Debbie will feature in the Eccles Borough Band’s next concert on 21st March 2015 at the Eccles Town Hall. For more details please see the concerts page or contact us.
